Raising awareness and take up of benefits

Potential Funders

It isn't only individuals who benefit from benefits.

  • Organisations, like Local Authorities, health groups, schools, social landlords and other funders get clear results which drive their strategies forward and help meet various outcomes in a straightforward and quantifiable way.
  • Benefits can be a stepping stone to many positive outcomes:
  • Local communities gain from the economic benefits of this national money being spent locally (see the Warwickshire Welfare Rights Advice Service document pdfTHE ECONOMIC BENEFIT TO WARWICKSHIRE).
  • Specific projects can meet specific funding aims.

    Recent examples include:
  1. A Housing Association had a group of people of different ages and with varying learning disabilities living in a Care Home. They wanted to move them to three separate houses. WWRAS oversaw the move in terms of their benefit income, ensuring a smooth transition and maximising each person's income as a result of this significant change of circumstance.

The funders saw a continuity of income, the individual's entitlements were protected and there were additional annual benefit gains of about £100,000.

  2. Local schools/academies have been funding us to boost take-up of free school meals that trigger the payment of pupil premiums. Increasing the take-up of parent's benefits which then passport the children to free school meals has been very effective.

Parents have an income boost and head teachers have valuable extra income to spend on their own schools.

BEING PROACTIVE

We aren't simply an advice agency, dealing with queries when something has gone wrong. The benefits system remains complex, and vulnerable and financially disadvantaged people often aren't aware when they are under-claiming. We actively seek out potential claimants, often from hard-to-reach communities, offering a benefit check and pursuing their full legal entitlements.

In this way they are able to be more financially independent and are steered away from loan sharks and payday lenders, and have more options/choices.

INNOVATIVE

We have vast experience of devising differing types of campaigns, using various techniques to seek out those hard-to-reach members of local communities.

AMAZING RESULTS

Even small pockets of funding have a disproportionate effect in money gains. Often with our take-up funding, each £1.00 spent on a WWRAS project brings in over £10.00 in extra benefits for local residents.

THE MULTIPLIER EFFECT

It is true that people on benefits are more likely spend their money in local shops and on local services.

But in addition to that it has also been established that benefit income has a multiplier effect on the local economy of 1.7.

Thus the £30 million that WWRAS brought into the local economy up to 2011 actually impacts as £51 million, because of this multiplier effect.

BRINGING ABOUT CHANGE VIA BETTER OUTCOMES

Boosting benefit income amongst financially disadvantaged communities or for the disabled and their carers will help meet many funders' priorities.

It leads to better physical and psychological health outcomes. It means that tenants are better able to pay their rent; there is more to spend on food, fuel; parents have more options for their children's development and interests.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

We regularly survey our clients to find out whether there has been an identifiable impact on their lives following our input. Many can now list the positive changes that having a few extra £pounds has made to their and their families lives.

Here are some recent quotes from people we have helped with our take-up work:
